Odisha Charts Ambitious Course in Marine Fisheries and Shrimp Exports

Odisha has unveiled two landmark initiatives—the Deep Sea Fishing Mission and the Shrimp Mission—aimed at transforming the state into Eastern India’s powerhouse for marine fisheries and aquaculture.

The Deep Sea Fishing Mission targets an additional 2 lakh metric tonnes of marine fish annually, the creation of over 50,000 jobs, and a boost in export revenue to Rs 5,000 crore by 2036.

Plans include building 150 new deep-sea vessels, modernising 500 mechanised boats, and upgrading harbours at Paradip, Dhamra, Chandipur, and Astaranga, alongside 103 fish landing centres.

Complementing this, the Shrimp Mission focuses on super‑intensive farming techniques capable of producing 30–40 metric tonnes per hectare.

Infrastructure development will include hatcheries, feed mills, and support facilities to ensure sustainable aquaculture and livelihood security.

A Memorandum of Understanding with ICAR‑CIBA will guide responsible aquaculture zone planning and geospatial mapping.

At a workshop attended by Union Ministry officials, ICAR institutions, NFDB, and stakeholders, five technical sessions outlined strategies for implementation.

Fisheries Minister Gokulananda Mallik emphasised Odisha’s vision to become the hub of marine fish and shrimp exports in Eastern India, positioning the state as a leader in the Blue Economy while ensuring sustainability and long‑term livelihood benefits.
