Odisha Braces for 7 Days of Thunderstorms as IMD Issues Orange Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Warning for several districts in Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next seven days.

The warning, which began with a Yellow Alert on May 3, is expected to intensify between May 4 and 6, with wind speeds reaching 50–60 kmph.

Districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal are likely to be affected.

The IMD cautioned that the severe weather could damage crops, trees, temporary structures, and power lines.

After May 6, conditions are expected to ease, though isolated thunderstorms and rain may continue until May 9 under Yellow Warnings, with reduced wind speeds of 30–40 kmph.

This weather pattern resembles the pre‑monsoon Nor’wester system, known for short but intense afternoon and evening storms in eastern India.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors during lightning, avoid open fields, secure loose objects, and follow local advisories to minimise risks.
