Mild Earthquake Jolts Koraput and Malkangiri, No Major Damage Reported
A mild earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Odisha late on April 4, 2026, sending tremors across Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
The quake, recorded at 11:31 pm IST, had its epicentre near the Koraput district at a shallow depth of 5 km, making the tremors more perceptible.
Residents in towns such as Jeypore, Sunabeda, Semiliguda, and Damanjodi reported sudden shaking of furniture and rooftops.
In parts of Malkangiri, utensils and kitchen items fell from shelves, prompting people to rush outdoors in fear. The tremors lasted between 6 and 8 seconds, though some pockets experienced shaking for up to 30 seconds.
Authorities confirmed that no casualties or major structural damage occurred.
The incident, however, sparked panic among locals, highlighting the vulnerability of the region to seismic activity.
Officials are monitoring the situation and reassuring residents that the tremors were brief and not severe.
