Low-Pressure System Over Bay of Bengal, Odisha Braces for Cold Wave and Dense Fog
A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Indian Ocean near the eastern equatorial region, according to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
The system, which developed around 5:30 PM on January 5, 2026, is expected to intensify within the next 24 hours, potentially influencing weather conditions across coastal India.
The IMD has forecast that the system may become well-marked in the coming days, leading to stronger weather activity over the Bay of Bengal and nearby regions.
Meanwhile, Odisha is reeling under a cold wave, with temperatures predicted to drop by 2–4°C over the next four days.
The chill is particularly severe in Kandhamal and Koraput districts, where both hilly and plain areas are experiencing biting cold.
Adding to the challenge, dense fog has been reported in districts such as Boudh, Balangir, Koraput, and Kandhamal, reducing visibility to as low as 20 meters.
The fog is most intense during early morning hours and is expected to persist for the next four days.
The IMD has issued an advisory urging residents to exercise caution, especially while travelling in low-visibility conditions.
With the combination of cold wave, dense fog, and an intensifying low-pressure system, Odisha is set to face a period of difficult weather in the days ahead.
