Jharsuguda Turns Into a Furnace as Odisha Battles Brutal Heatwave
Jharsuguda is reeling under one of the harshest heatwaves of the season, with temperatures soaring to extreme levels and nights offering little relief.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that the intense spell will continue until May 24, leaving residents with no immediate respite.
Daily life has slowed to a crawl as people avoid venturing outdoors during peak hours. Roads and markets remain deserted, while hospitals are on alert for heat‑related illnesses.
Historical records underline Jharsuguda’s vulnerability, with past May temperatures crossing 47°C and even touching 48°C.
The IMD has issued severe heatwave alerts for Sambalpur and Balangir, while Sundargarh, Sambalpur, and Balangir are expected to endure unusually warm nights.
Coastal Odisha, though cooler at 36–38°C, is grappling with humidity levels above 70%, making conditions feel close to 50°C.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors between 11 am and 3 pm, drink plenty of water, and take special care of children, the elderly, and those with health conditions.
With no immediate improvement in sight, Odisha remains firmly in the grip of a punishing summer.
