Berhampur Assault Case: Prime Accused Mukesh Sahu Injured in Police Encounter After Viral Video
Berhampur: The main accused in the sensational Berhampur couple assault case, Mukesh Sahu, was injured in a police encounter on Tamana Road late Wednesday night.
Sahu sustained bullet injuries in both knees and one hand during the exchange of fire and is currently stable at MKCG Medical College & Hospital.
The incident follows the brutal attack on May 18, when Umesh Rath and his female friend were assaulted on Giri Road. Rath was dragged off his scooter and beaten with sticks, leaving him critically injured.
He is undergoing treatment in Visakhapatnam.
A video of the assault went viral on social media, sparking outrage and raising concerns about law and order in Berhampur.
Police had earlier arrested two other accused — Raj Malhotra and Lingaraj Samal — and seized two scooters, a stick used in the assault, and a mobile phone linked to the crime.
Several suspects remain at large, and special teams have been deployed to trace them.
The police are also probing the motive behind the attack and possible prior links between the accused and the victim.
The case has become one of the most discussed crime stories in Odisha this week, with public demands for strict action.
