ISKCON Faces Backlash Over Untimely Rath Yatra Abroad Amid Puri Tradition Row
Puri’s Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb has urged ISKCON to strictly adhere to scriptural dates for Rath Yatra and Snana Yatra, as observed at the Jagannath Temple in Odisha.
The appeal comes after ISKCON organised “Adinia” (off‑tithi) Rath Yatras in at least 11 international locations, including Canada, the US, Europe, England, and Africa, along with an early Snana Yatra in Australia.
According to the Skanda Purana, Rath Yatra must be held on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya (July 16, 2026), while Snana Yatra falls on Jyeshtha Purnima.
Devotees argue these dates hold deep spiritual significance and should not be altered.
Members of the Odia diaspora and scholars have criticised ISKCON’s global celebrations, accusing the organisation of diluting tradition for convenience and publicity.
ISKCON, however, defends its practice, citing logistical hurdles abroad such as permits, crowd management, and time zone differences.
The group insists its goal is spreading devotion, not replacing Puri’s sanctity.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration has repeatedly appealed to ISKCON and even Indian leadership to preserve scriptural fidelity.
As the official Puri Rath Yatra approaches on July 16, the divide persists — tradition versus adaptation.
The king’s call remains clear: “Respect the tithi, honour the tradition.”
