Hirakud Dam Opens Gates, Releases First Floodwater of the Season
Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities today opened four floodgates, marking the season’s first release of floodwater.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida inaugurated the operation by lighting a ceremonial lamp before the gates were opened—three on the left and one on the right.
Officials confirmed that the release is part of routine monsoon flood management, balancing upstream inflows and ensuring safety downstream.
Five additional gates are expected to be opened later in the day to regulate rising water levels.
The controlled discharge, though heavy, is within safe limits and designed to protect districts downstream while preventing excessive pressure on the dam structure.
Local residents gathered to witness the symbolic event, which signals Odisha’s preparedness for monsoon challenges.
Hirakud Dam, Asia’s longest earthen dam, continues to play a vital role in flood control, irrigation, and power generation.
