Elephant Calf Skeleton Found in Ganjam Forest Amid Rising Deaths

Forest officials in Ganjam district have discovered the dismembered skeleton of a five‑year‑old female elephant calf in Paichhalia Reserve Forest.

The remains, believed to be around two months old, were examined by wildlife experts and sent to the OUAT laboratory in Bhubaneswar for further analysis.

The exact cause of death remains unclear due to the advanced state of decomposition.

North Ghumusar DFO Himanshu Sekhar Mohanty and Ranger Prashant Behera visited the site and initiated a detailed investigation.

This marks the third elephant death in the Gayaganda range within three months, following the death of a tusker in March and an 11‑year‑old male elephant in May.

The recurring fatalities have raised alarm among environmentalists and local communities, underscoring the urgent need for stronger conservation measures to protect Odisha’s elephant population.
