BoB Depression Intensifies, Odisha–Andhra Coast on Alert

A depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified and is expected to become a deep depression within 12 hours.

According to the IMD, the system will cross the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during the night of September 23 and early hours of September 24, 2026.

At 5:30 am on September 22, the depression was centred about 220 km southeast of Gopalpur, 220 km south‑southeast of Puri, 230 km east‑southeast of Kalingapatnam, and 320 km east of Visakhapatnam.

Wind speeds are forecast to reach 55–65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph, with rough to very rough sea conditions along the Odisha–Andhra coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over south Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall on September 23–24.

Neighbouring states including Chhattisgarh and Telangana may also experience significant showers.

Authorities in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have issued warnings for rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.

Coastal districts are on alert for flooding, waterlogging, and damage from gusty winds.

Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in low‑lying and coastal areas during the peak impact period.
