BJD Slams Centre Over Rice Procurement Crisis in Odisha

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has strongly criticised the BJP-led central government for failing to address Odisha’s rice procurement crisis.

Senior BJD leaders alleged that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has neglected its responsibility, leaving lakhs of tonnes of rice rotting in storage.

Odisha’s Food Supplies Minister Krushna Chandra Patra revealed that despite repeated visits to Delhi, the Centre ignored pleas to lift rice stocks.

Out of the 30 lakh metric tonnes targeted, only 7–8 lakh tonnes have been lifted, sparking concerns of wastage and farmer distress.

The BJD highlighted irregularities in paddy registration, fertiliser shortages, and mismanagement at mandis, accusing the Centre of discrimination against Odisha.

Leaders contrasted the current crisis with former CM Naveen Patnaik’s tenure, when Odisha won five Krishi Karman Awards for record procurement.

The party also criticised the silence of Odisha’s BJP MPs and warned of statewide protests if immediate action is not taken.

The BJD demanded urgent intervention to clear rice stocks and safeguard farmers’ livelihoods.
