Bhubaneswar Boils: Humidity Pushes Heat Index to 44°C

Bhubaneswar woke up to oppressive heat and humidity on May 22, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recording a minimum temperature of 31.4°C at 5:30 am.

Despite the early hour, humidity levels soared to 84%, pushing the “feels‑like” temperature to a staggering 44°C.

Data from the past four days shows a consistent rise in the heat index, with values ranging between 39°C and 44°C.

Experts explain that high humidity slows down sweat evaporation, trapping heat close to the body and making conditions dangerous for outdoor activity.

The IMD has forecast daytime highs above 42°C across several parts of Odisha, warning that hot and humid conditions will persist.

While isolated thundershowers may occur, they are unlikely to provide significant relief.

Health officials have urged residents to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and those with heart or respiratory conditions.

Preventive measures include staying hydrated, wearing loose cotton clothing, avoiding direct sunlight, and limiting outdoor activity during peak hours.
