Bhitarkanika National Park Reopens After Annual Breeding Season Closure

Bhitarkanika National Park in Odisha has reopened to visitors today, August 1, after its annual three‑month closure.

The park remains shut from May 1 to July 31 each year to allow saltwater crocodiles to breed undisturbed.

During this period, female crocodiles guard their nests along creeks and riverbanks, often displaying aggressive behaviour to protect hatchlings.

Authorities restrict tourist entry to ensure both visitor safety and wildlife conservation.

With the breeding season now over, domestic and foreign tourists can once again explore the mangrove ecosystem, enjoy boat rides, and view wildlife from watch towers.

Entry gates and facilities have been restored, and visitors are required to carry valid identity proof for admission.

The reopening marks the beginning of another season of eco‑tourism in one of India’s richest estuarine habitats, home to crocodiles, migratory birds, and diverse flora and fauna.
