Tamil Nadu Gas Leak Claims Five Odia Workers
Periyapalayam, Tiruvallur district, witnessed a tragic industrial accident when ammonia gas leaked from a fish processing factory, killing five Odia migrant workers.
The victims—Jimani Juang, Geeta Juang, Bhumia Juang, Shivani Juang, and Phulmani Juang—were engaged in packaging and cleaning tasks when they inhaled toxic fumes, leading to severe respiratory distress.
Emergency teams rushed to the site, evacuating workers and sealing the plant. Authorities have launched an investigation into safety lapses.
Odisha Labour Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia confirmed the fatalities, while a three‑member team from Odisha reached Tamil Nadu to coordinate relief, compensation, and repatriation of the bodies.
The Odisha government expressed deep sorrow and pledged full support to the victims’ families.
The incident has reignited concerns about industrial safety standards and the vulnerability of migrant workers in hazardous environments.
Both Tamil Nadu and Odisha governments have promised strict action against negligence and stronger monitoring of chemical units.
