Sudarsan Pattnaik’s Sand Art Honors Frontline Heroes on World Health Day

Puri, Odisha, April 7, 2026: Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik marked World Health Day with a striking six‑foot sand sculpture at Puri Beach, paying tribute to frontline healthcare workers.

The artwork carried the message “Together for Health, Stand with Science” — echoing the World Health Organisation’s 2026 theme.

Crafted with several tonnes of sand and supported by students from his institute, the sculpture depicted human figures symbolising unity, compassion, and the vital role of science in global health.

Pattnaik emphasised the importance of healthier lifestyles, stronger healthcare systems, and trust in science.

A Padma Shri awardee, Pattnaik has represented India in over 65 international sand art championships.

His creations often spotlight pressing issues such as HIV/AIDS, COVID‑19, global warming, terrorism, and plastic pollution.

World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, commemorates the founding of the WHO in 1948.

This year’s theme highlights the One Health approach — linking human, animal, and environmental health — while combating misinformation and promoting global scientific cooperation.
