Cyclone Alert Issued For South Odisha As Bay Depression Likely To Intensify Into Very Severe Cyclonic Storm

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for the Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha coasts as a depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm in the coming days.

According to the weather agency, the depression was located over the east-central and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and is moving southeastward.

Meteorologists expect the weather system to strengthen progressively into a Deep Depression, a Cyclonic Storm, and later a Severe Cyclonic Storm before intensifying further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm.

The IMD has indicated that the system is likely to move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast and could make landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam after gaining significant strength.

At the time of landfall, sustained wind speeds are expected to range between 115 kmph and 125 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph.

In view of the evolving weather situation, the IMD has issued an Orange Message, urging authorities and residents in vulnerable coastal areas to remain alert and closely monitor official advisories.

While Andhra Pradesh is expected to bear the brunt of the cyclone, adjoining South Odisha districts could also experience adverse weather conditions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions as the system intensifies.

Fishermen have been advised to keep track of weather updates and avoid venturing into deep sea areas during the period of cyclone development.

Authorities are expected to review preparedness measures in coastal districts as forecasts continue to be monitored.

Based on current projections, the next few days will be crucial as the Bay of Bengal system evolves into a potentially dangerous cyclonic storm.
