Jagannath Temple to Launch Online Darshan Booking for Persons with Disabilities

Puri: In a significant step towards improving accessibility and inclusivity, the Puri Jagannath Temple administration has decided to introduce an online slot booking system and special darshan facilities for persons with disabilities (PwDs).

The initiative aims to ensure a smoother and more comfortable pilgrimage experience for differently-abled devotees.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Dibyajyoti Parida, the Puri Collector, along with officials of the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).

Under the proposed arrangement, the facility will initially be launched on a pilot basis, allowing up to 20 devotees per day to avail of the service. Eligible devotees will be able to use the facility once every six months.

As part of the new system, a dedicated online registration portal will be developed for advance bookings. Registered devotees will receive confirmation messages specifying their scheduled darshan date.

To facilitate easy access to the shrine, temple authorities have planned a range of support services, including assistance near the Satyanarayan Temple, battery-operated vehicle transportation to the North Gate, wheelchair-friendly ramp access, volunteer escorts, and dedicated medical and police support.

Officials have clarified that the special darshan arrangement will remain unavailable on festival days and occasions with heavy footfall to ensure smooth crowd management and devotee safety. The service will be operational only on regular days.

The SJTA expects the initiative to be formally introduced after Kartik month.

The move is being viewed as a major step towards making one of India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations more accessible and inclusive for all devotees.
