Cyclone Alert: Chilika Boat Services Suspende Till Oct 29

Bhubaneswar: In view of an approaching cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal, authorities have suspended all boat services in Chilika Lake until October 29 as a precautionary measure.

The restriction applies to both tourist and ferry operations across major jetties in the lagoon.

Based on reports, the Puri district administration has directed officials to strictly enforce the ban to ensure public safety.

The suspension covers key boat operation points, including Barkul, Balugaon, Mangalajodi and Satapada, which witness significant tourist and local passenger movement throughout the year.

Daily ferry services between Jhanikuda in Ganjam district and Satapada in Puri district have also been halted.

Officials have instructed local police, tehsildars and block-level authorities to prevent boat operations during the restriction period and take action against violations.

The move comes as weather conditions are expected to deteriorate due to the developing cyclonic system.

Chilika, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, supports tourism, transportation and fishing activities through more than 1,000 boats operating from various jetties.

The suspension is expected to temporarily impact these activities but is aimed at safeguarding lives and property.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea, warning of rough weather conditions.

Fishermen currently at sea have been asked to return immediately, while fishing operations will remain suspended until October 29.

The administration has urged residents, tourists and boat operators to cooperate with safety measures and remain alert to official weather advisories as the cyclone situation evolves.
