Odisha on High Alert: 30 Disaster Response Teams Deployed Ahead of Cyclone

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has intensified its preparedness measures as a cyclonic system over the Bay of Bengal threatens to impact parts of southern Odisha.

Authorities have adopted a comprehensive “Zero Casualty” approach, mobilising disaster response teams, activating round-the-clock control rooms, and initiating evacuations from vulnerable areas.

Based on information reported by Odisha Deploys 30 Disaster Teams, Activates 24/7 Control Rooms Ahead of Cyclone, five districts have been placed on high alert.

The districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are expected to witness heavy rainfall and strong winds.

As a precautionary measure, schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres in these districts have been ordered to remain closed.

To strengthen emergency preparedness, the state government has deployed 30 disaster response teams, including 24 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) units and six National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams.

The highest concentration of teams has been stationed in Ganjam district, which is considered particularly vulnerable.

Authorities have directed district administrations to identify residents living in low-lying areas, katcha houses, and thatched structures and relocate them to safer shelters.

Special arrangements have been made for pregnant women, senior citizens, children, and persons with disabilities.

The government has also imposed restrictions on fishing activities and advised tourists to avoid waterfalls, dams, hill destinations, and other vulnerable locations across the affected districts.

Farmers have been urged to safeguard standing crops, especially mature paddy, maize, and ragi, by harvesting them where possible and storing produce securely.

Veterinary teams have also been deployed to ensure the safety of livestock and provide fodder support if required.

Meanwhile, hospitals have stocked essential medicines and emergency supplies, while power and telecom departments have positioned restoration equipment and personnel to respond quickly to potential disruptions.

With the cyclone threat looming, Odisha’s administration is focusing on rapid response, early evacuation, and coordinated disaster management efforts aimed at minimising loss of life and property.
