Puri Administration Clears 600 Acres of Illegal Prawn Enclosures in Chilika
The Puri district administration has intensified its efforts to restore the ecological balance of Chilika Lake by launching the ‘Gheri-Mukta Chilika’ campaign.
On Wednesday, officials demolished around 600 acres of illegal prawn enclosures in the Krushnaprasad tehsil.
The drive targeted bamboo structures, nets, and other materials used to encroach upon the lake’s water bodies.
Police forces were deployed to ensure smooth execution and prevent law-and-order issues during the operation.
Authorities confirmed that this campaign will continue in phases, aiming to completely free Chilika from unauthorised aquaculture activities.
The move is expected to protect biodiversity, support traditional fishing communities, and safeguard the lake’s global recognition as Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.
