PUCC Validity Periods to be Extended for BS‑VI Vehicles

The Central Government has proposed significant amendments to the Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) norms under the Motor Vehicle Rules.

The draft notification suggests extending the validity of PUCC for newer vehicles, aiming to simplify compliance and reduce congestion at testing centres.

Under the proposed changes, BS‑VI vehicles up to six years old will be eligible for a three‑year PUCC validity, compared to the current six‑month renewal cycle.

Vehicles aged between six and ten years will require annual renewal, while those older than ten years—including BS‑VI and BS‑IV models—must continue with six‑month renewals.

Officials say the move is designed to ease the burden on vehicle owners, streamline emission monitoring, and align India’s practices with global standards.

The draft is currently open for stakeholder feedback before final implementation.
