Odisha Women Observe Sabitri Brata 2026 with Devotion

Bhubaneswar, May 16: Odisha today observed Sabitri Brata, a festival of devotion and feminine strength, with married women across the state fasting and praying for the long life and prosperity of their husbands.

Falling on Jyestha Amavasya, the ritual is deeply rooted in the legendary tale of Sabitri and Satyavan, symbolising unwavering faith and triumph over destiny.

Women began the day with ritual baths, adorned themselves in new sarees, applied alta and sindoor, and worshipped the sacred Sila Pua (grinding stone), representing Goddess Sabitri.

Offerings included rice, pulses, and seasonal fruits such as mango, jackfruit, banana, and pomegranate, with many households presenting 7, 9, 11, or 21 varieties of fruits.

Fasting styles varied between nirjala (without water) and phalahari (fruit-based), while the recitation of Sabitri Brata Katha reinforced the festival’s cultural depth.

Families supported the observance, with parents and brothers contributing to puja expenses, and markets bustling with Sabitri bazaars.

The day was marked not only by household rituals but also by community gatherings at temples.

Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik commemorated the occasion with a special creation at Puri beach, highlighting the cultural pride associated with the festival.

Sabitri Brata continues to embody devotion, love, and Odia identity, blending Puranic tradition with local customs and reaffirming the strength of faith in Odisha’s cultural fabric.
