Odisha Jail Under Scrutiny After Inmate’s Sudden Death

Balasore, April 12: An undertrial prisoner, Srikant Nayak of Oupada in Balasore district, died under suspicious circumstances at the Nilagiri Sub‑Jail on Sunday, prompting a probe into jail conditions and prisoner health monitoring.

Nayak, lodged in jail in connection with a murder case, reportedly developed sudden health complications after lunch.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but was declared dead on arrival.

Police have taken possession of the body, sent it for postmortem examination, and initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause and circumstances of death.

The incident has raised concerns about inmate welfare and medical facilities in Odisha’s prisons.
