Odisha Govt Approves 10,372 Additional UG Seats Across Colleges and Universities
Bhubaneswar: In a major boost to higher education, the Odisha Higher Education Department has sanctioned an increase of 10,372 undergraduate seats across state public universities, government colleges, and aided institutions for the 2026–27 academic session.
The move comes after admission trends revealed overwhelming demand in several subjects compared to sanctioned strength.
The rationalisation aims to ensure equitable access and strengthen academic infrastructure.
According to official data, the distribution of seats is as follows:
- 1,216 seats in state public universities
- 4,684 seats in government colleges
- 3,416 seats in aided‑488 category colleges
- 1,056 seats in aided‑662 category colleges
The revised seat matrix has already been updated in the SAMS portal for admissions.
Regional Directors of Education and college principals have been instructed to implement the changes immediately.
Joint Secretary Smt. Mousumi Nayak stated that the expansion reflects Odisha’s commitment to aligning institutional capacity with student interest and strengthening higher education infrastructure.
