Odisha Flags Off 6th Phase of Senior Citizen Pilgrimage Scheme, 775 Devotees Begin Journey to Ayodhya and Varanasi
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Wednesday flagged off the sixth phase of the Mukhyamantri Baristha Nagarika Tirtha Yatra Yojana, enabling hundreds of senior citizens to undertake a spiritual journey to some of India’s most revered pilgrimage destinations.
A special pilgrimage train carrying 775 senior citizens from Cuttack, Khordha, Puri, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, and Jagatsinghpur districts departed from Bhubaneswar for Ayodhya and Varanasi under the state-sponsored scheme.
The train was flagged off by Law, Works and Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, who extended his best wishes to the pilgrims and highlighted the government’s commitment to facilitating spiritual tourism for elderly citizens.
The pilgrimage has been organised by the Odisha Tourism Department in collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

To ensure a safe and comfortable journey, a team of 25 officials has been deployed to assist the pilgrims throughout the tour.
During the visit, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi and the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya.
The itinerary also includes participation in the renowned Ganga Aarti on the banks of the Ganges.
The pilgrims are scheduled to return to Odisha on November 2 following the completion of the religious tour.
The Mukhyamantri Baristha Nagarika Tirtha Yatra Yojana has emerged as a flagship initiative of the state government to provide senior citizens with opportunities to visit prominent religious destinations across the country.
During the 2026-27 financial year, the government aims to facilitate pilgrimage tours for around 8,000 senior citizens in 10 phases, covering destinations such as Ayodhya, Varanasi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Rameswaram, and Madurai.
The initiative continues to receive widespread appreciation for promoting spiritual well-being and making pilgrimage travel accessible to elderly citizens across Odisha.
