Odisha Emerges as Mango Powerhouse, Wins National Praise

Odisha’s rich mango diversity took centre stage at a recent Zonal Conference, drawing accolades from Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

More than 35–40 cultivars were showcased, including elite Shankar and hybrid varieties, alongside rare local gems.

Star attractions included Hamilton Sundari from Mayurbhanj, prized for its striking red hue, and the premium Miyazaki mango, valued at over Rs 1,000 per kg.

Other notable varieties such as Baldev (Keonjhar), Jahangir (Balangir), and Belgaja (Dhenkanal) highlighted the state’s regional diversity.

Improved cultivars like Arka Nilachal, Kesari, Arka Punita, Arka Suprabhat, Arka Uday, and Ambika further underscored Odisha’s progress in scientific mango cultivation.

Minister Chouhan commended Odisha’s farmers and urged greater focus on value addition and exports.

Favourable climate, dedicated growers, and active Farmer-Producer Organisations (FPOs) have boosted both quality and quantity.

Odisha recently achieved a milestone by exporting Amrapalli mangoes from Dhenkanal to London, strengthening its global identity.

Looking ahead, emphasis will be placed on modern packaging, aggregation, and market linkages to expand Odisha’s footprint in national and international mango markets.
