Odisha CM Announces Rs 41.17 Cr Welfare Package for Kendu Leaf Workers
Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has unveiled a comprehensive welfare package worth Rs 41.17 crore from the Kendu Leaf Welfare Fund, aimed at improving the livelihoods of thousands of kendu leaf pluckers, binders, and seasonal employees across Odisha.
The initiative covers the 2024 crop year and the 2025–26 financial year, directly benefiting over 8.7 lakh workers engaged in the state’s forest-based economy.
A total of 8,59,727 pluckers received footwear, carrying cloth, and head caps valued at Rs 460 each, amounting to Rs 39.54 crore.
Additionally, 18,768 binders were provided at Rs 700 each for blankets and mosquito nets, totalling Rs 1.31 crore. Seasonal employees numbering 16,237 received Rs 100 each, adding up to Rs 16.23 lakh.
Officials emphasised that the package reflects the government’s commitment to social security, better working conditions, and recognition of the vital role of kendu leaf workers in sustaining rural livelihoods.
The program was implemented under the direct supervision of Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia, with support from the Labour and State Employees Insurance departments.
By strengthening welfare measures, the state aims to enhance dignity, safety, and economic resilience for communities dependent on kendu leaf collection.
