Odisha Charts ₹5,000 Cr Sports Roadmap, To Host World Athletics 2028
Odisha has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to transform the state into a global sports hub during its first Chintan Shivir on sports development.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasised that sports are not just about medals but about instilling discipline, teamwork, and resilience among youth.
The state announced major investments, including Rs 1,000 crore for a multi-purpose sports complex at Gothapatna and over Rs 4,000 crore for modern stadiums at the block level.
Odisha will also host prestigious events such as the World Athletics Championships and Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in 2028, alongside a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver‑level competition this year.
Grassroots initiatives like the Chief Minister’s Trophy aim to identify and nurture rural talent, ensuring that opportunities extend beyond urban centres.
Sports & Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj highlighted the importance of execution, while Padma Shri Dilip Tirkey and other dignitaries reaffirmed Odisha’s commitment to building a strong sporting ecosystem.
The roadmap aligns with the state’s vision of Samruddha Odisha by 2036 and contributes to the national goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047, positioning Odisha as both a producer of world‑class athletes and a host of international sporting events.
