New Law in Odisha Targets Offensive Social Media Language
The Odisha government is preparing to introduce the Prevention of Hate Speech and Hate Crime Act, a landmark legislation aimed at curbing offensive language both online and offline.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan stated that social media has increasingly become a breeding ground for indecent behaviour, harassment, and verbal abuse, necessitating strong corrective measures.
The proposed law will penalise obscene, abusive, and offensive speech with fines and imprisonment, ensuring accountability for those misusing digital platforms.
Recommendations from the Law Commission have also been incorporated to address the rising misuse of social media.
Officials emphasise that the Act seeks to restore civility in public discourse, safeguard citizens from harassment, and promote responsible communication across platforms.
