Naveen Patnaik’s Possible Rajya Sabha Move Sparks Speculation in Odisha Politics
Bhubaneswar: Speculation is mounting in Odisha’s political circles over whether former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik may soon shift to the Rajya Sabha.
With four seats set to fall vacant, insiders suggest the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leadership is considering nominating Patnaik, a move that could ease internal disputes over candidate selection.
Patnaik, who led Odisha for 25 years, first entered politics in 1997 after the death of his father, Biju Patnaik.
He won Lok Sabha elections in 1998 and 1999, serving as Union Minister under Atal Bihari Vajpayee before returning to state politics in 2000. At 79, Patnaik is seen as needing more rest, and a Rajya Sabha seat would allow him to remain active in national politics while spending more time in Delhi.
Although BJD leaders have declined to confirm the speculation, sources indicate that nominating Patnaik could prevent further controversy within the party.
His potential move to the Upper House would mark a significant shift in Odisha’s political landscape, keeping him engaged nationally while redefining his role in state politics.
