Nabarangpur Cremation Dispute: Villagers Oppose Converted Woman’s Last Rites
Odandi village in Nabarangpur district witnessed tension after locals opposed the cremation of a 50‑year‑old woman, Gagiri Gond, at the village cremation ground.
The objection stemmed from her family’s past religious conversion, which villagers claimed disqualified them from using the community facility.
Gagiri Gond, a widow living with her three daughters and a son, passed away earlier this week.
When relatives prepared for her cremation, a section of villagers resisted, leading to heated arguments and eventually a physical confrontation.
Authorities, including the Additional Tehsildar and police officers, rushed to the spot to mediate.
Despite their intervention, villagers remained firm in their opposition, leaving the body uncremated for over 30 hours.
To prevent escalation, police deployed one platoon of force in the village.
Officials continue efforts to resolve the dispute and maintain peace.
