Magha Saptami 2026: Lakhs of Devotees Celebrate at Chandrabhaga Beach, Konark

Konark, Odisha | January 25, 2026 Lakhs of devotees thronged the sacred Chandrabhaga Beach near Konark today to observe Magha Saptami, one of Odisha’s most revered festivals dedicated to Lord Surya.

From the break of dawn, pilgrims took the holy dip in the sea and offered prayers while witnessing the majestic sunrise.

The rituals were marked by the grand procession of the three presiding deities — Trivenishwar of Madhipur, Aishaneshwar of Santhapur, and Dakshineshwar of Kurujanga — who were ceremonially brought to the Chandrabhaga Tirtha Mandap.

The deities were bathed in the Mahasnana ritual before special prayers were performed.

The festival holds deep mythological significance. It is believed to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Surya, also known as Mitraditya.

Legends connect the day to Samba, son of Lord Krishna, who was cured of a disease after penance at Chandrabhaga. Devotees also recall King Langula Narasingha Deva, who is said to have established the iconic Konark Sun Temple on this auspicious day.

Faithful pilgrims believe that bathing at Chandrabhaga during Magha Saptami cleanses families of disease, sorrow, and fear.

Many stayed overnight in makeshift huts, cooked food in earthen pots, and broke the pots as part of a traditional observance before gathering at sunrise.

The spectacle was not only a spiritual congregation but also a vibrant cultural showcase, reinforcing Odisha’s rich heritage and drawing visitors from across India.
