Kendrapara Woman Fights Off Crocodile With Spoon
Kendrapara, Odisha – In a dramatic encounter near Bhitarkanika National Park, a 54‑year‑old woman, Chabi Bhukta, survived a crocodile attack while washing utensils in the Ramachandi river.
The saltwater crocodile seized her hand and attempted to drag her into deeper waters.
Displaying remarkable courage, she struck the reptile’s eyes with a spoon, forcing it to release her grip.
Bhukta sustained injuries to her hands, legs, and abdomen and is currently undergoing treatment at the Mahakalapada Community Health Centre.
This incident comes weeks after a fisherman was killed in a similar attack in the same region.
Forest officials note a rise in human‑crocodile conflicts around Bhitarkanika, with four deaths reported in the past 14 months.
Records show 14 fatalities in three years and 30 in four years.
Experts warn that attacks peak during the May–July mating and nesting season, when crocodiles are more aggressive and venture onto land to lay eggs.
