Kendrapara: Minor Dies, Four Hospitalised After Suspected Watermelon Poisoning in Pattamundai Village

Kupuni village in Pattamundai block of Kendrapara district was struck by tragedy after a family fell ill following the consumption of watermelon.

Thirteen‑year‑old Swadhin Senapati, grandson of Panchanan Senapati, succumbed while being shifted to SCB Medical College, Cuttack.

Four other family members—including Swadhin’s grandfather, parents, uncle, and sister—were admitted to Kendrapara District Headquarters Hospital with severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Doctors suspect food poisoning due to adulterated or contaminated fruit.

The Kendrapara CDMO confirmed the symptoms were consistent with food poisoning and said investigations are underway.

While the condition of the hospitalised family members is stable, they remain under close observation.

The incident has left the Senapati family devastated and the entire village in shock. Locals described Swadhin as a bright student and “the pride of the family.”
