ISKCON Bhubaneswar Seeks Uniform Rath Yatra Dates
Bhubaneswar: The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Bhubaneswar has appealed to the Governing Body Commission (GBC) to review its decision of holding Rath Yatra on dates different from the traditional Puri Rath Yatra.
ISKCON Bhubaneswar President Shashwata Das emphasised that the festival should be celebrated on a single day, in line with centuries‑old traditions followed in Puri.
He stressed that the sentiments of millions of devotees must be respected, noting that the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri is regarded as the living representative of Lord Jagannath.
Das revealed that a committee has been formed in Odisha to communicate devotees’ concerns and persuade the GBC to reconsider.
He also pointed out that ISKCON India has limited authority over international centres, suggesting that intervention from the Central Government may be necessary to ensure uniform observance worldwide.
The issue has sparked debate among devotees and religious leaders, many of whom believe that a common celebration date would preserve the sanctity of the festival.
Reports indicate that ISKCON declined an invitation from the Gajapati Maharaja for discussions, further intensifying the controversy.
