Former Gunupur MLA Ramurty Gomango Dies at 76

Cuttack, June 12: Former Gunupur MLA Ramurty Gomango passed away at the age of 76 while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Gomango, who had been suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes, was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar two days earlier before being shifted to SCB Hospital, where he died around 3 am.

Gomango represented the Gunupur Assembly constituency twice — first as a Janata Dal legislator (1990–1995) and later as a BJP MLA (2000–2005) during the BJD-BJP alliance.

His political career was marred by controversy following the death of his pregnant wife Shashirekha in 1995.

Her half-burnt body was found at their residence, leading to a sensational murder case.

Gomango claimed political framing, but after a prolonged 28‑year trial, a Special Court in Bhubaneswar convicted him in June 2023 of murder and destruction of evidence.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000.

Despite his conviction, Gomango remained a notable figure in Odisha’s political history, remembered for his dual stints in the Assembly and the shadow of the case that defined his later years.
