Former Congress MLA Mohammed Moquim Announces Plans for New Odisha-Centric Party

Bhubaneswar: Former Congress legislator Mohammed Moquim has revealed plans to launch a new political party focused on Odisha’s regional aspirations.

The initiative, currently in its final stages of preparation, is expected to reshape the state’s political landscape.

Moquim stated that the party may be named Odisha Janata Congress or Odisha Lok Congress, with consultations underway among leaders, supporters, and civil society groups.

To build momentum, the party has scheduled two major conventions: a women’s convention on January 30, 2026, and a farmers’ convention on February 5, 2026.

The new outfit will prioritise grassroots participation, preparing for upcoming municipal and panchayat elections.

Moquim emphasised that the party’s mission is to address issues affecting women, farmers, and the wider population.

Clarifying speculation, Moquim noted that Congress MLA Sofia Firdous attends events only as a trustee of the Moquim Foundation and remains committed to the Congress party.

Political observers believe the move could attract disenchanted Congress leaders, potentially altering Odisha’s electoral dynamics.
