Chandrika Hembram Death Case: Family Alleges Harassment, Complexion Bias by OAS Officer

Cuttack/Bhubaneswar: The tragic death of medical student Chandrika Hembram in the Kathajodi River has sparked outrage and suspicion, with her family alleging harassment and rejection by her Odisha Administrative Service (OAS) officer boyfriend.

According to Chandrika’s mother, Hiramani Hansda, the officer distanced himself after another woman entered his life, allegedly refusing marriage due to Chandrika’s complexion.

Despite a 14‑year relationship, the family claims she was pressured into undergoing skin‑lightening injections in Bhubaneswar in hopes of saving the bond.

Police recovered Chandrika’s mobile phone, prescription papers, and belongings near Netaji Subhas Bridge.

Investigators are examining call records, chats, and digital evidence to establish the sequence of events.

An audio recording has surfaced of Chandrika’s mother confronting the officer, where he purportedly admitted his feelings had faded.

Family members said Chandrika had even contemplated legal action before her death.

The case has been registered under Case No. 283, Sections 108 and 34.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishikesh Khilari confirmed that probes are underway into harassment, abetment to suicide, and murder angles, with forensic reports and witness statements expected to clarify the cause.
