BJD Warns of Blockade Over MMDR Act, BJP Hits Back
The political clash over mineral rights has intensified in Odisha, with the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) threatening statewide economic blockades if the Centre does not revoke amendments to the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act (MMDR Act).
BJD MLA Arun Sahoo accused the Centre of stripping Odisha of its mineral autonomy, alleging the state lost nearly ₹1.20 lakh crore in dues between 2005–2026.
He criticised Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for ignoring Naveen Patnaik’s demand for a special assembly session, warning that protests will escalate if the amendments are not rolled back.
Countering the allegations, BJP leader Amar Patnaik dismissed BJD’s claims as politically motivated.
He argued that the amendments would ensure transparent auctions, stable taxation, and greater investor confidence, ultimately benefiting Odisha’s economy.
BJP leaders cautioned that blockades would harm the state’s growth rather than protect it.
The dispute underscores the deepening rivalry between BJD and BJP, with mineral rights emerging as a flashpoint in Odisha’s political landscape.
