Odisha Clears ₹653.99-Crore Flood Control, Irrigation Projects to Strengthen Water Infrastructure

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has intensified its efforts to strengthen flood management and irrigation infrastructure by approving a series of key projects aimed at enhancing disaster resilience and water resource management across the state.

According to Odisha Steps Up Flood Protection, Irrigation Infrastructure Development, major proposals were cleared during recent meetings of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC).

At the 158th TAC meeting of the State Flood Control Board, authorities reviewed 38 proposals comprising 31 flood control projects and seven drainage projects, with a total estimated investment of ₹653.99 crore.

The projects focus on strengthening river embankments, protecting vulnerable flood-prone regions, and improving drainage systems to mitigate flood risks.

The initiative comes as Odisha continues to prioritise infrastructure aimed at reducing the impact of recurring floods in several districts.

Officials noted that seven Flood TAC meetings have already been conducted during the current financial year, reflecting a concerted effort to expedite project appraisal and approvals.

In addition to flood protection measures, the state has also approved a significant number of irrigation projects.

During the 162nd TAC meeting on irrigation, 47 proposals related to in-stream storage structures and associated infrastructure received approval.

The irrigation projects are expected to improve water storage capacity, enhance irrigation efficiency, strengthen distribution networks, and ensure more equitable utilisation of water resources across the state.

With the latest approvals, Odisha is moving ahead with an integrated approach to flood protection and irrigation development, aiming to safeguard communities while supporting agricultural growth and water security.
