BJD Slams Private Nuclear Plant Proposal in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has strongly opposed the proposal to establish a privately developed nuclear power plant in Odisha, warning of grave safety risks and national security concerns.
BJD spokesperson Lekhasri Samantsinghar criticised the BJP‑led Central Government’s December 2025 amendment that opened nuclear energy projects to private participation.
She argued that nuclear infrastructure must remain under government control, citing past disasters such as Hiroshima, Chornobyl, and Fukushima as reminders of the dangers.
Samantsinghar accused the Odisha government of blindly following the Centre’s directives, ignoring the interests of the state’s people.
She warned that the BJD would launch statewide protests if the project moves forward, pledging to safeguard public health and safety.
India currently operates about 8.8 GW of nuclear power capacity, all under government ownership.
The BJD insists that privatisation of such sensitive infrastructure poses unacceptable risks to both citizens and national security.
No immediate response has been issued by either the state or the central government regarding the opposition.
