Bhitarkanika’s Crocodile Nest Count Hits 117 in 2026

Bhitarkanika National Park has once again reaffirmed its status as India’s prime estuarine crocodile habitat, with the 2026 nesting survey recording 117 active nests.

The Kanika Wildlife Range accounted for the majority with 106 nests, followed by Rajnagar with 10, and Mahakalpada with 1.

The mangrove ecosystem currently supports 1,858 estuarine crocodiles, reflecting a stable population trend.

Over the past five years, nesting activity has remained consistent, ranging between 114 and 122 nests annually.

Recognised as a Ramsar wetland of international importance, Bhitarkanika plays a crucial role in global biodiversity conservation.

Odisha remains the only state in India where all three crocodilian species—saltwater crocodile, mugger, and gharial—still occur in the wild.

Wildlife officials emphasised that the survey not only tracks population health but also guides long‑term conservation planning to protect this fragile mangrove ecosystem.
