Annual Irrawaddy Dolphin Census Begins in Chilika Lake, Odisha

The annual census of Irrawaddy dolphins has commenced in Odisha’s Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.

The exercise, which began on January 20, 2026, is a crucial step in monitoring the health of the lake’s ecosystem and ensuring the conservation of its flagship species.

A total of 18 teams have been deployed across Satpada and Balugaon ranges, each comprising researchers, wildlife experts, and local boat operators.

Equipped with GPS devices, binoculars, and advanced tracking methods such as the Line Transit Method, the teams are conducting systematic observations from 6 AM to 12 noon daily.

Senior officials, zoology professors, environmentalists, and members of boat associations are actively participating in the census.

To minimise disturbances, tourist activities have been restricted, and boat movements are being closely monitored in dolphin‑active zones.

The census will continue until January 22, followed by verification of data by wildlife staff. The findings will play a vital role in shaping conservation strategies and safeguarding Chilika’s ecological balance.
