Youth Drowns at Sorulukonda Barrage in Malkangiri
Malkangiri, Odisha: A 23‑year‑old youth, identified as Anup Dhar from MV‑36 village under Korukonda block, drowned at Sorulukonda Barrage on Sunday afternoon while bathing with his family.
According to eyewitnesses, strong currents swept through the barrage, trapping Anup’s foot in a rock crevice.
Despite desperate rescue attempts by relatives and locals, he could not be saved.
Police from Orkel station, led by ASI Ajit Takari, joined the search operation and later recovered the body.
Anup was rushed to Balimela area hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The body was subsequently sent for post‑mortem in Malkangiri before being handed over to his grieving family.
The incident drew hundreds of onlookers and cast a pall of gloom over MV‑36 village and nearby areas.
Authorities have assured that safety measures around the barrage will be reviewed to prevent similar tragedies.
