Suspended Odisha Jailor Alleges Former Prison DG Pressured Him to Frame Inmate in Brown Sugar Case
Bhubaneswar: A fresh controversy has emerged in Odisha’s prison administration after suspended Baleshwar District Jailor Pradipta Kumar Mahalik alleged that former Director General of Prisons Sushant Nath and other senior officials pressured him to falsely implicate an inmate in a brown sugar case.
According to a representation submitted to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department, Mahalik claimed he was directed to plant brown sugar on inmate Rajib Lochan Das and frame him in a criminal case while serving at Baleshwar District Jail.
The suspended jailor alleged that he was offered incentives, including rewards, prizes, and career advancement opportunities, to execute the alleged plan.
However, he stated that he refused to comply with the instructions.
Mahalik further claimed that the pressure and subsequent developments adversely affected his health, causing him severe mental stress and illness.
He alleged that his refusal to act on the instructions ultimately led to his suspension on October 17, 2017.
In his grievance petition, Mahalik has sought a review of his suspension order, describing the action against him as unethical, illegal, and malicious.
He has requested the state government to revoke the suspension and reinstate him at the Baleshwar District Jail.
The allegations have brought renewed attention to prison administration practices in Odisha.
However, the claims remain allegations made by the suspended official, and no official response from Sushant Nath or findings from any government inquiry were mentioned in the report.
