Over 1.6 Lakh Evacuated as Odisha Intensifies Post-Cyclone Relief and Rehabilitation Efforts
Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s disaster preparedness and response mechanisms were put to the test as more than 1.6 lakh people were evacuated from vulnerable areas ahead of a cyclone threat, with authorities now shifting focus to relief, restoration, and rehabilitation in affected regions.
The large-scale evacuation operation was aimed at minimising risks to life and property in coastal and low-lying districts.
Government agencies activated hundreds of cyclone shelters and relief centres while deploying teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and Fire Services Department to ensure swift emergency response.
Special arrangements were made for vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, elderly residents, and children.
Senior officials were assigned to districts to monitor the situation, coordinate rescue and relief activities, and oversee damage assessments.
Authorities are also working to restore essential services and infrastructure in areas impacted by adverse weather conditions.
Educational institutions in several vulnerable locations remained closed as a precautionary measure, while residents were advised to stay alert amid forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Officials stated that the state was able to mitigate major damage through timely evacuations and preparedness measures.
With immediate threats easing, attention has now turned toward rehabilitation efforts, ensuring the delivery of relief assistance, restoration of public services, and support for affected communities.
Odisha has earned national recognition in recent years for its disaster management capabilities, and the latest response once again demonstrated the state’s emphasis on proactive preparedness and coordinated emergency operations.
