Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Kerala, Three Days Late

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of the Southwest Monsoon in Kerala on June 4, 2026, three days later than the usual date of June 1.

The monsoon has advanced over the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, Kerala, Mahe, and parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as well as several regions of the Bay of Bengal.

According to IMD, strong westerly winds and intensified convective cloud activity over the southeast Arabian Sea triggered the delayed onset.

Kerala has already experienced widespread rainfall, including isolated heavy showers.

The monsoon is expected to progress further north and east in the next 2–3 days, covering Goa, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, additional districts in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and parts of the Northeast.

This marks the official start of the monsoon season over the Indian mainland for 2026.
