Rayagada district witnessed violent unrest in Shagabari village, Kashipur block, as protests against the Sijimali Bauxite Mines project escalated into a clash with police.
Demonstrators armed with stones, swords, and axes attacked security personnel, leaving 33 officers injured, including senior officials such as SDPO Girishankar Sahu and Kashipur IIC Dev Mallick.
Seven officers remain in critical condition at Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital, while others are receiving treatment at Kashipur Community Health Centre.
Authorities have imposed Section 163 in the area to restore order and prevent further violence.
The Odisha government had approved the mining project for a private company engaged in metals, oil & gas, and critical minerals.
However, local communities have consistently opposed the project, citing environmental and social concerns.
The clash underscores the growing tension between development initiatives and grassroots resistance in the region.
