Odisha’s Railway Renaissance: Phulbani Set to Join the National Grid

In a landmark move to bolster Odisha’s transportation infrastructure, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Ashwini Vaishnaw convened a high-level meeting with state MPs to discuss the expansion of the railway network, including the long-awaited connection of Phulbani in Kandhamal district.

The meeting emphasised the strategic importance of rail connectivity in driving industrial growth, improving agricultural logistics, and enhancing citizen mobility.

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Odisha has received unprecedented railway budget allocations over the past decade, with nearly Rs 90,000 crore invested in new lines, doubling, and multi-line projects.

Key projects discussed include the Talcher–Gopalpur line, which will connect districts like Anugul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Nayagarh, and Ganjam, and the proposed linkage of Phulbani to the national railway grid.

These developments are expected to unlock economic potential in mineral-rich and tribal regions, aligning with the “Purvodaya” vision for eastern India’s development.

Minister Pradhan highlighted that improved rail infrastructure will not only facilitate freight movement from coal-producing zones to ports but also accelerate Odisha’s industrialisation, tourism, and social progress.
