Odisha on Red Alert as Bay of Bengal Low Pressure Triggers Torrential Rain
Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal–north Odisha coasts has triggered intense rainfall across Odisha.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple warnings as the system, accompanied by a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, is expected to move west-northwestwards over the next 24 hours.
Several districts are under high alert.
Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Balasore face a Red Warning for extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm.
Eight districts, including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, and Jharsuguda, are under Orange Warning, while 19 districts have been placed under Yellow Warning.
The IMD forecasts a prolonged wet spell until September 3, with western Odisha bracing for another intense rainfall episode on Monday.
Nuapada, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh are expected to be hit hard.
Authorities have cautioned residents about flash floods, waterlogging, rising river levels, and possible disruption of road connectivity.
Citizens in Red Warning districts are urged to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
